Week 3 Quarterback Rankings Outlooks
Mac Jones, San Francisco 49ers
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Mac Jones is lined up for another start in place of Brock Purdy (toe/shoulder) in Week 3. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said it is "highly unlikely" Purdy gets the start on Sunday. Jones finished as the QB7 in Week 2, completing 26 of 39 passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns against the Saints.
On Sunday, the 49ers face an Arizona Cardinals defense that gave up 328 yards and three touchdowns to Carolina's Bryce Young last week and might be without cornerbacks Max Melton (knee) and Will Johnson (groin). Jones is projected as a QB2 in Week 3, making him viable in superflex formats and deeper leagues.
Drake Maye, New England Patriots
New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye is an intriguing fantasy option heading into Sunday's Week 3 contest against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Maye has looked solid through the first two games of the season, demonstrating accurate passing, moderately clean football, and rushing upside. His path to fantasy production continues to trend in the right direction this weekend.
While the Steelers have been a strong defense in recent history, they have struggled to contain quarterback production this year, allowing the sixth-most fantasy points to the position. Both Justin Fields and Sam Darnold have found fantasy success against Pittsburgh, and Maye should follow in their footsteps. He's a fringe top-12 fantasy quarterback heading into Week 3.
Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes found himself on the injury report with a right wrist injury, but practiced in full all week and has been removed from the report. Mahomes failed to eclipse 200 passing yards in last week's loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, but he was still able to salvage his fantasy day on the ground. The Chiefs star has rushed for at least 57 yards and a touchdown in each game to open the season, making him a top-five quarterback and the leading rusher on his team.
The Chiefs have opened the season 0-2 for the first time in the Mahomes era and suddenly find themselves at the bottom of the AFC West. The 30-year-old celebrated his birthday on Wednesday and will try to pick up a birthday win on Sunday against the New York Giants. The Giants have been a juicy matchup for quarterbacks to begin the season, as shown by their shootout with the Dallas Cowboys last week.
With Xavier Worthy (shoulder) potentially available for the contest, this could be a get-right game for the Kansas City offense as a whole and Mahomes could find more success through the air. Mahomes is ranked QB5 in our RotoBaller rankings this week, making him a strong start at the position.
C.J. Stroud, Houston Texans
Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud will look to get his team their first win of the season in Week 3 as they visit the Jaguars on Sunday afternoon. Last Monday, Stroud completed 13-of-24 passes for 207 yards and a touchdown in the Texans' one-point loss to the Bucs. Stroud's touchdown pass came to Nico Collins on the first drive of the game, but the team struggled to move the ball after that. Stroud's main challenges have been the lack of protection from the patchwork offensive line and a lack of depth at wide receiver behind Collins.
Maybe with Christian Kirk (hamstring) back in the rotation, Stroud can get rolling against the Jags, who rank in the middle of the pack against quarterbacks so far this season. RotoBaller has Stroud as the QB22 in this matchup due to his offense's struggles, which limits him to a low-end QB2 option in two-QB leagues.
Justin Herbert, Los Angeles Chargers
Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert looked sharp in Monday night's 20-9 win over the Las Vegas Raiders. He completed 19 of 27 passes for 242 yards and two touchdowns, while adding 31 rushing yards on nine carries. Herbert has appeared poised and confident through two weeks, and he'll need to stay on his game against a tough Denver Broncos defense.
While the Broncos have elite talent, they just allowed 29 points to the Indianapolis Colts. Although some analysts believe the Chargers may lean more on the run this week, Herbert's talent and recent performance still make him a strong start. RotoBaller projects him as QB7 this week, and he should be a top choice in all formats.
Sam Darnold, Seattle Seahawks
Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold is a potential streamer in Week 3 when Seattle hosts the New Orleans Saints. He is coming off a 17.8-point fantasy outing in Week 2. Darnold struggled in Week 1, but he shook off the jitters in Week 2 and threw for 295 yards and two touchdowns. As he continues to grow more comfortable in Seattle's offense, Darnold should be a solid matchup play.
The Saints have allowed Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray and San Francisco 49ers quarterback Mac Jones to have QB1-level games in the first two weeks of the season. That type of production can be expected of Darnold against a Saints defense that has been solid but not spectacular thus far this season. Many forget that Darnold was a legitimate QB1 in 2024 with the Minnesota Vikings. He is stepping into an offense with a lot of new pieces and a new offensive coordinator. It is only a matter of time before the production begins to flow.
