Recent Fantasy Football Wide Receiver News

Matthew Golden, Green Bay Packers

Green Bay Packers rookie wide receiver Matthew Golden had a "tremendous camp," according to Jeff Howe of The Athletic. Additionally, Howe writes that it "might not be all that shocking if (Golden) quickly becomes quarterback Jordan Love's go-to wide receiver." Golden may see even more opportunities early in 2025 with fellow Packers wideouts Christian Watson (knee) starting the year on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list and Jayden Reed (foot) battling a Jones fracture in his left foot.

Golden is the first wide receiver the Packers have selected in the first round since 2002, so the organization clearly believes in his talent. The 22-year-old profiles as a high-upside WR3/4 in redraft fantasy leagues.

Tetairoa McMillan, Carolina Panthers

The Carolina Panthers are wasting no time elevating rookie wideout Tetairoa McMillan, especially after trading veteran Adam Thielen back to Minnesota. McMillan, the No. 8 overall pick, offers size, athleticism, and big-play ability, and his role as Bryce Young's top target appears to be taking shape quickly.

Young showed steady growth and confidence in the second half of 2024, and Carolina is betting that pairing him with a youthful duo of McMillan and Xavier Legette will accelerate the offense's development. With Thielen gone, McMillan is primed to shine as a focal point in 2025 and could be a breakout candidate in fantasy.

Travis Hunter, Jacksonville Jaguars

Jacksonville Jaguars rookie wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter will play both ways in 2025, but the team is unwilling to tip its hand on how often he'll line up on either side of the ball. Speaking with the media on Wednesday, first-year general manager James Gladstone said, "There's a competitive advantage to not knowing what side of the ball he's going to be deployed on fully. If that's half, if that's a mixture ... all those sorts of things can vary from one week to the next."

That could be a bit frustrating for fantasy managers, who are holding out hope that Hunter will play a significant role on offense and produce big numbers as the team's WR2 opposite Brian Thomas Jr. Hunter, the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner and second overall pick, dealt with an upper-body injury earlier this month and only played in one preseason game. He returned to practice on Wednesday and is "rolling full speed" heading into the Jags' regular-season opener against the Carolina Panthers on Sept. 7, according to Gladstone.

Emeka Egbuka, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie wide receiver Emeka Egbuka could be in store for a massive role in the passing attack early in the season. According to Greg Auman of FOX Sports, Tampa Bay veteran wideout Chris Godwin (ankle) is not expected to return to action until October. In addition, second-year wideout Jalen McMillan (neck) is slated to miss the vast majority of the season. As a result, Egbuka could slot in as the clear No. 2 option opposite Mike Evans for the better part of his debut season.

The Buccaneers selected Egbuka out of Ohio State in the opening round of this year's draft. Egbuka finished his time at Ohio State, totalling 1,011 yards and 10 touchdowns in his final campaign. Given Tampa Bay's current wide receiver room, Egbuka's ADP will continue to climb as the regular season approaches. He should hold WR2 value with upside during their Week 1 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons.

Jauan Jennings, San Francisco 49ers

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings (calf) has continued to be held out of practice, according to Jennifer Lee Chan of NBCS. The 28-year-old has been dealing with a calf injury throughout most of the month. Fantasy managers should continue to pay close attention to his status, as his participation in the season opener could continue to remain in doubt if he is unable to take the practice field. However, the 49ers could be exercising extreme caution with him as their top wideout, Brandon Aiyuk (knee), is already slated to miss at least the first month of the season.

Last season, Jennings enjoyed a breakout campaign, totaling 975 yards and six touchdowns. If Jennings were to miss the start of the season, second-year wideout Ricky Pearsall and veteran tight end George Kittle will likely be given a hefty dose of targets.
