Quentin Johnston Suffers Concussion in Preseason Loss
Quentin Johnston (head) has been diagnosed with a concussion after exiting Saturday's preseason contest against the Los Angeles Rams, according to head coach Jim Harbaugh (via Daniel Popper of The Athletic). As a precaution, Johnston was transported to the hospital for further evaluation. The 23-year-old suffered his injury while failing to catch a pass on the third play from scrimmage. He was down on the field for quite some time, but he was eventually able to stand up and walk to the cart with assistance from medical personnel. Johnston, a former first-round pick, has struggled to emerge as an alpha receiver through his first two NFL seasons. Specifically, drops have plagued the TCU product, who converted 91 targets into 55 receptions, 711 yards, and eight touchdowns last year. Those numbers are nothing to scoff at, but his productivity and dependability both fluctuated week-by-week in 2024, making him difficult to trust as anything more than a low-end WR3/FLEX option in fantasy football. Heading into the 2025 campaign, he faces added competition in the form of Keenan Allen and Tre Harris. Plus, the team's No. 1 receiver, Ladd McConkey, continues to trend upward ahead of his second NFL season. Even when Johnston clears concussion protocol, he'll be tough to trust in fantasy lineups.
