Recent Fantasy Football Tight End News

Darren Waller, Miami Dolphins

Miami Dolphins tight end Darren Waller will not join the team for training camp practices this week, according to head coach Mike McDaniel. Waller began camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list due to conditioning issues after coming out of retirement, and McDaniel isn't ready to throw him into the fire during joint practices this week with the Detroit Lions.

The 32-year-old veteran will continue to work on his conditioning after not playing at all in 2024, but he's unlikely to come off the PUP list and play in the second preseason game this Saturday against the Lions. Waller had back-to-back 1,000-yard receiving seasons in 2019 and 2020 with the Raiders, but it's fair to wonder if he has that kind of production in him at this point in his career. He's worth a late-round flier as a TE2 given the weak nature of the position, but don't expect him to put up the numbers that Jonnu Smith did in Miami in 2024.

Hunter Henry, New England Patriots

New England Patriots tight end Hunter Henry (undisclosed) is dealing with an undisclosed injury that he suffered on Sunday and missed practice on Monday as a result, according to ESPN's Mike Reiss. New England is holding joint practices with the Minnesota Vikings on Wednesday and Thursday, and Reiss writes that Henry might not be available for those sessions.

The 30-year-old Henry started 16 games for New England in 2024, recording 66 catches for 674 yards and two touchdowns. If he were to miss time, veteran Austin Hooper would likely step in as the Patriots' TE1. Henry's absence could also improve the target-share outlooks for the team's top wide receivers, Stefon Diggs and DeMario Douglas.

Colston Loveland, Chicago Bears

Chicago Bears first-round tight end Colston Loveland played in the first two series in the Bears' opening preseason game, catching one of two targets for eight yards in the 24-24 tie versus the Miami Dolphins. The 10th overall pick got his first NFL action in Sunday's game with Tyson Bagent and the rest of the Bears' backups.

Veteran tight end Cole Kmet is listed as the starting tight end on the Bears' unofficial depth chart and didn't see the field, which is a bit of a worrying sign for the rookie. New Bears head coach Ben Johnson has previously coordinated an offense that produced elite tight end production from Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta. Loveland will need to surpass Kmet on the depth chart and rely on Johnson's scheme and quarterback Caleb Williams' potential to match what LaPorta achieved as a rookie.

AJ Barner, Seattle Seahawks

Seattle Seahawks tight end AJ Barner has looked "very promising" in training camp practices and is "currently the No. 1 tight end," according to Michael-Shawn Duggar of The Athletic. A fourth-round pick out of Michigan in the 2024 draft, Barner recorded 30 catches for 245 yards and four touchdowns in 17 games (six starts) as a rookie.

Seattle released veteran tight end Noah Fant last month, which could be an indication of the confidence the organization has in Barner. However, the Seahawks also used a second-round pick in the 2025 draft at the position when they selected Elijah Arroyo, so Barner will still have in-house competition for targets and playing time.

Tucker Kraft, Green Bay Packers

Green Bay Packers tight end Tucker Kraft played the majority of snaps on the Packers' first two series in the Green Bay preseason opener against the New York Jets. While Kraft didn't earn a target from quarterback Jordan Love, he played on 10-of-12 offensive snaps per Nathan Jahnke of Pro Football Focus. Kraft's night was over after the first-team offense left the field after the second drive.

Kraft's second NFL season was excellent with 50 receptions, 707 receiving yards, and seven touchdowns while playing in all 17 games. As the clear top tight end on the Packers in 2025, Kraft's services can be procured in fantasy for a mid-round pick and could provide massive benefits if he can take a leap in production this season.

Noah Gray, Kansas City Chiefs

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Noah Gray has looked very strong in training camp and is receiving strong buzz from reports. Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated noted that the tight end looks like a "high-end" starter. Throughout his four-year career in Kansas City, Gray has typically taken the backseat to future Hall of Famer Travis Kelce. However, after catching just 28 passes in both 2022 and 2023, Gray was able to enjoy a mini-breakout season in 2024.

Last fall, Gray caught a career-best 40 passes for 437 yards and five touchdowns. He enjoyed a productive stretch from Weeks 10 through 15 when he averaged a solid 10.2 PPR points per game. Fantasy managers should keep an eye on his progression early in the season, as he could continue to carve out a role behind Kelce. However, for now, Kelce remains the clear TE1 in Kansas City. Gray is best viewed as a high-upside TE3 in deeper formats.
