MarShawn Lloyd 2025 NFL Player Outlook: Talented Handcuff Make For An Excellent Insurance Policy, But A Lackluster Fantasy Option
MarShawn Lloyd had high hopes coming into his rookie season, but unfortunately, an array of injuries derailed any potential he may have had. Seemingly, anytime Lloyd was ready to get going, he suffered another injury. He had a hip injury to start training camp, strained his hamstring in the preseason opener, and sprained his ankle in his first game of the regular season which resulted in an eight-week stint on Injured Reserve. Then, when he was set to return last November, he suffered from appendicitis that required surgery and officially ended his season. As an NFL player, Lloyd has six carries for 15 yards and one reception for three yards, so the only thing fantasy managers have to profile him is his college tape. While the numbers never jumped off the page for Lloyd at South Carolina and USC, his talent routinely jumped off the screen. He is an explosive runner with 4.4 speed, impressive contact balance, and excellent receiving skills, and some even thought he could challenge starting running back Josh Jacobs for significant volume. However, due to his injuries, and more importantly due to Jacobs' incredible performance last season, Lloyd will not be relevant in fantasy football unless Jacobs misses time. Jacobs is extremely durable, having played all 17 games in two of the last three years, and he has proven that he can handle one of the largest workloads in the league. Fantasy managers should expect the ground game in Green Bay to run through Jacobs once again, and only consider Lloyd in the later rounds as a pure handcuff. He is currently being drafted as RB62, well out of range of most redraft leagues, however, he does make for an interesting buy-low option in dynasty leagues since Jacobs is 27 years old, has a ton of mileage on his tires, and becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2028 assuming he is not a cap casualty the year prior.
