ANALYSIS: Washington Nationals right-hander Hunter Harvey was lights out this spring. The 29-year-old posted a 2.16 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, and a 15:2 K: BB across 8 1/3 innings. He has been primarily used in a high-leverage role for the Nationals, setting career highs across the board. His 0.94 WHIP last season was seventh-best among qualified relievers in 2023. Harvey racked up 29 solds (10 saves and 19 holds) in 2023 with an elite 28.5% strikeout rate while recording a 2.82 ERA over 60 2/3 frames last season.
Staying healthy has been Harvey's most significant issue. Harvey missed four weeks last year due to a right elbow strain. Before 2023, he was limited to 56 2/3 innings over his previous three seasons and was sidelined most of 2022 with a right forearm strain. Kyle Finnegan may be Washington's primary closer after recording 28 saves in 2023, but Harvey has been the better pitcher overall. Finnegan was dealing with a back issue heading into 2024 but appeared healthy going into the season.

Harvey entered the eighth inning and allowed two runs on two hits while striking out one over an inning in Saturday's 7-6 win over the Reds. Harvey did manage to pick up the cheap win on Saturday while Finnegan was called on in the ninth inning to preserve the one-run lead. He allowed one walk while striking out one over a scoreless inning to earn the save. Despite Finnegan getting the first save for Washington, fantasy managers should still add Harvey in 12-plus team leagues, hoping he can overtake Finnegan for Washington's closer role later in the season.
