First-Round Leader Options To Consider:
Justin Thomas 25/1 (William Hill)
We have a unique spot here where sharp markets HATE Justin Thomas, and the public seems to be all over him at the CJ Cup. That is less than ideal from a handicapping process, especially for contests like DraftKings, where Thomas' playability directly coincides with trying to create leverage against our competitors, but I am going to continue to trust my model in any of these futures markets and pencil in the American as my top first-round leader target at 25/1.
The 29-year-old ranked inside the top 10 for every metric that I ran this week that excluded form, and I am a believer that the current state of his game is better than its perception - evident by his strong Presidents Cup performance that likely should have seen him go undefeated if it weren't for his slip up late in singles against Si Woo Kim.
Thomas' short game is elite. He can spray it off the tee more than usual because of his built-in distance, and the weighted tee-to-green metrics not only graded best in the field but also did so in a fashion that lapped everyone else. Maybe the floor is worth considering more than I was on Monday for DFS, but the upside is proper for us to take a shot in any futures-type market.
Tommy Fleetwood 55/1 (DraftKings)
Only three golfers graded inside the top 30 of my model for upside and cracked the top 10 of my value section. Two will be mentioned later in this piece, but let's start with Tommy Fleetwood, who continues to pop on my model during these fall swing contests.
The Englishman does have a profile that looks better to produce throughout four days than over one round, but the weighted proximity is 19 spots better than expected when mimicking the stats for Congaree, and the Bermuda putting should continue that line of thinking for him to have the potential to catch fire on Thursday. We know the short game is elite, so let's see if everything can come in around it to produce magic in round one.
Keith Mitchell 65/1 (FanDuel)
The only thing that brings Keith Mitchell down in my database is his proximity, but the weighted proximity provides a 16-spot improvement over his baseline projection, giving us a golfer that might not have the flaws that initially showed on my model.
Mitchell ranks fourth in this field for strokes gained off the tee when I added in some semblance of distance, and the ability for him to score on these par-fives should give us a spike of production throughout the contest. In reality, he is playable in most markets, and while I couldn't get there for an outright, I will gladly take the upside in the first-round leader market at 65/1.
Gary Woodland 90/1 (DraftKings)
I mentioned how three golfers inside my top 30 cracked the 10 best values on the board in the way I merged DraftKings and outright totals, and we are going to get the last two options to end this article.
Woodland has gained throughout an event with his driver and irons in 10 consecutive contests, but his inability to string both facets together at once has diminished an otherwise stellar display that has been further affected by a putter that has gone ice cold. The American is averaging 3.03 shots to the field ball-striking over his past three contests, resulting in a missed cut, 64th and 51st, and while I don't necessarily trust him over four days for that reason, there is potential there for him to produce any day he tees it up.
Luke List 95/1 (FanDuel)
How bad would you consider negative-4.51 shots to the field over the last six trackable starts when it comes to List's putting?
In my database, it is one of the most appalling runs I have seen in quite some time, but I will trust the other metrics for a round, which have shown List to gain ball-striking in his past 13 starts. Sometimes you just need a putt to fall here and there to spurn on a big round, and the game is percolating with upside if he can get hot early.
