James Wood is one of the top prospects for the Washington Nationals and currently plays for the Harrisburg Senators at the AA level. He was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the second round of the 2021 MLB Draft.

The 20-year-old outfielder was part of the Juan Soto trade that saw other top Padres prospects such as MacKenzie Gore and C.J. Abrams also come to the Nationals. Since that trade, Wood has certainly raised his value and is a player to keep an eye on.

So far, he hasn't been able to reach AAA, but it won't be long until we see him playing for the Rochester Red Wings in AAA.

James Wood has been impressive this season

After being traded by the Padres, James Wood has continued to improve his game, as evidenced by the fact that he is currently ranked as the sixth-best prospect in all of baseball according to the MLB pipeline. In each of his first two seasons with the Padres, he finished with an OPS of .956 or higher. While he was with the NL West team, Wood was ranked as the 15th-best prospect in all of baseball.

He has now climbed higher on the rankings than the Padres' top infield prospect Jackson Merrill, who is currently ranked as the 13th-best prospect. In the 19 games that Wood has participated in at the AA level for the Senators so far, he has a batting average of .253, and an on-base percentage of .288. In that time frame, he has also hit four home runs, and the Nationals organization is very excited about his future.

James Wood could get called up to the majors next season

Previously, James Wood was expected to be called up to the major leagues in 2025, but due to his rapid development, he could play for the Washington Nationals next season. After starring for the Wilmington Blue Rocks, he was promoted to the AA level. He is a player who could shine next season and is certainly a great player to add from minors leagues for the redraft leagues.
