Zac Gallen Commands The Edges Of The Zone
4 years agoArizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen, who was compared to Greg Maddux last year by Orel Hershiser for his ability to control the edges of the strike zone, is a dark-horse candidate for the National League Cy Young Award after posting a 2.78 ERA in his first two big-league seasons. The right-hander doesn't have overpowering stuff, but his elite command makes him a top-50 overall fantasy player. According to Statcast, the 25-year-old had top-five command of his pitches in 2020. He left fewer than one in every five pitches in the heart of the zone last year, which was one of the lowest rates in the league. Meanwhile, he hit the edges of the zone nearly half the time, putting him at the top of baseball in that category. Gallen also cut down on his walks in 2020 and has a 28.5 percent strikeout rate in 152 innings. Despite playing for a bad team in the desert, Gallen is a very strong SP target.
