Yoan Moncada 2021 Outlook: Terrible 2020 Cause for Concern
4 years agoChicago White Sox third baseman Yoan Moncada was expected to be a top-tier fantasy hitter in 2020 after a breakout 2019. The top Cuban prospect posted a .315 average with 25 HR and 79 RBI, showing marked improvement in all areas. Then, he plummeted below his previous levels and never delivered on the promise that made him a top-50 fantasy pick. Moncada batted .225 with six HR in 52 games. Most alarming is that his hard-hit rate decrease was one of the biggest in the majors, going from 47.9% to 33.1% according to Statcast. Several big-name sluggers such as Pete Alonso and Anthony Rendon also saw their Hard% drop significantly over the short season but Moncada's was precipitously low and he didn't deliver enough power numbers to mitigate the concerns heading into a new season. Furthermore, it wasn't a case of a slow start getting the best of him; Moncada got worse as the season progressed. The talent is there and we've gotten a glimpse of it but at this point, Moncada's MLB output has been more down than up. Some of these concerns are baked into his early ADP of 87 but there is still plenty of risk even though his surrounding cast makes him a strong bounce back candidate. It's best not to reach on him based on the low floor.
