Yasmani Grandal 2022 Player Outlook: Worth The Cost In OBP Leagues
3 years agoGrandal proved to be one of the White Sox most valuable hitters during the 2021 season despite playing only 93 games. He popped 23 homers in that limited time (an elite 16.3 PA/HR) with one of the best OBP marks in the league at .420 (on a ridiculous 23% walk rate – his career mark is 15%). He would have decimated most of his career-bests if he did not miss so much time to injury, and that has drafters excited for what the 2022 season holds. Grandal is currently the fifth catcher off the board in drafts with an ADP of 106. That is a hefty price to pay for a catcher (especially in non-OBP leagues) but Grandal is a rare example of a catcher you can feel very confident about getting offensive production from. The worst-case scenario (given health, of course) still leads Grandal to boosting your team in on-base percentage while giving you a good amount of home runs. He will also likely get some starts at DH, which gives him one of the best volume projections at the position as well. The price is justified in OBP leagues, but you are likely overpaying for Grandal in leagues where that is not the case.
