Willson Contreras 2020 Outlook: Sturdy Mid-Round Backstop
5 years agoAfter a down 2018 campaign, Willson Contreras rebounded in 2019 with 24 homers, 57 R, and 64 RBI, all good enough for a top-five finish at the position. His .272/.355/.533 slash line was nothing to scoff at either despite a pair of second-half IL stints that limited him to 28 games after the All-Star break. Contreras adopted a fly-ball mentality in 2019 that resulted in a 24.6% FB%, a 7% increase over his lifetime mark, which helped him set a new personal best in round-trippers. The 27-year-old also made more effective contact than ever with a 41.5% Hard Hit% and 11.5% Barrel% that shattered his previous lifetime marks. Contreras will likely return to his customary fifth spot in the Cubs batting order in 2020, an optimal setting to drive in runs. He likely won’t lead the position in any particular category, but his sturdy across the board production solidifies his floor as a top-10 backstop in fantasy. Contreras’ 121.6 ADP presents a fair cost, but not a pick with a ton of upside in the mid-rounds of your draft.
