Welington Castillo 2019 Player Outlook: A Solid Late-Round Catcher
6 years agoWhere’s the beef? Hopefully not on the sidelines in 2019. Castillo’s 2018 campaign was interrupted on May 23 when he was hit with an 80-game suspension for a positive PED test. Ultimately, Castillo played in just 49 games in 2018 and put up an uninspiring .710 ISO and .147 ISO, both below his career averages. As far as catchers go, Castillo has proven capable with the stick in previous seasons. Between 2015-2017 he had a .767 OPS and .192 ISO in 1200 plate appearances, which is more than serviceable as a fantasy backstop. Unless one believes his production was fueled by PEDs, there is no reason to think Castillo can’t bounce back in 2019. Plus, the White Sox don’t have any better catching options to eat into his playing time. For those that prefer to wait on catcher, Castillo can be had on the cheap. RotoBaller experts have him ranked as the number 13 catcher and Castillo is the 15th catcher off the board in NFBC leagues. He is shaping up to be a solid value as a late-round catcher in 2019.
