Vernon Davis 2018 Outlook: Instant TE1 If Jordan Reed Is Sidelined
6 years agoJordan Reed's inability to remain on the field throughout an entire 16-game season has defined his career, while prohibiting him from accumulating the elite numbers that would have otherwise ensued. His prolonged injuries in 2016 and 2017 also triggered a return to fantasy relevance for Davis, who collected 87 of his 128 targets for 1,231 yards and five touchdowns while Reed was sidelined for 14 games. Any additional health issues that might hamper Reed this season would instantly propel Davis back onto the fantasy radar. It would simultaneously reunite him with Alex Smith, who combined with Davis on 229 passes and 30 touchdowns while the tandem performed for the 49ers. Smith launched more targets to his tight ends than any other quarterback last season and should be comfortable locating Davis once again. While Davis remains primarily a waiver wire option, his track record should instill confidence that he can be productive if his role is suddenly enhanced. Anyone who owns Reed should consider deploying a late round pick on Davis, as it could protect you from the problematic task of attempting to find an adequate replacement during the season.
