Tyler Boyd 2022 Outlook: Third Option in High-Powered Passing Attack
3 years agoTyler Boyd was never going to remain a fantasy WR2 after the Bengals took Ja'Marr Chase with the fifth overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. He went from averaging 7.8 targets per game in 2020 to just 5.9 targets per game in 2021, Chase's rookie season. He finished the season as WR37 on a per-game basis in PPR formats. He still played a high percentage of snaps, just wasn't targeted on nearly as many of his routes, which makes sense given Chase and Tee Higgins are both incredible talents on the outside. That being said, Boyd does offer a nice combination of a safe floor and some upside should either of the top-two options be forced to miss any time. In the two games Higgins missed a season ago, Boyd saw 8.5 targets per game and his targets per route run (TPRR) rate increased from 17% to 38.6%. Because of Joe Burrow and a high-powered passing attack, Boyd remains squarely in the WR4 conversation in PPR leagues with a hint of upside should anything happen to Chase or Higgins.
