Trey Lance 2023 NFL Player Outlook: Fantasy Feast or Famine?
2 years agoThe roller coaster that San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance (ankle, finger) has put the fantasy community on is less fun than it looked. However, the upside of his abilities on this high-powered offense remains. The No. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft sustained a fibula fracture and ligament disruption in his right ankle in Week 2. He also suffered a hairline fracture of his right index finger in the 2021 preseason, which limited his throwing ability. "He was able to get such a better base in these last two months that I think Trey is the best that we've (seen) him right now," said 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan. Currently, locked in a QB battle with Brock Purdy, the biggest question is who will be their 2023 starter? Although the team has come out and said that Purdy has earned the right to be the starter, he may not be healthy come the start of the season. As a result, Lance will start Week 1 or at least compete with a recently rehabilitated Purdy for the job. If he manages to start Week 1, I will reference this quote from Shanahan in March 2023: "Brock played eight games. Trey had that job going into last season, and if he would've played eight games like that, no one else would've been able to come in and beat him out."
