Trevor Story 2023 Player Outlook: Draft-and-Stash Strategy a Risky Proposition
2 years agoTrevor Story's (elbow) first season with the Boston Red Sox didn't go as planned. The former Rockies superstar appeared in just 94 games, hitting .238 with 16 home runs and 13 stolen bases while posting an elevated 30.8% K%. His .196 isolated power was the worst of his seven-year MLB career, while his 8.1% BB% was the second-worst mark in that time. While both player and club looked forward to a rebound season in 2023, the 30-year-old underwent an internal bracing procedure on his right elbow, a lighter version of the dreaded Tommy John surgery. Nonetheless, the procedure will keep Story out for most, if not all, of the upcoming campaign. Red Sox CEO Chaim Bloom is on record stating that while a return is possible, the organization isn't banking on it. Even if Story were to return late in the season, his production is unpredictable nearly a full calendar year since last seeing game action. As a result, a draft-and-stash strategy could very well wind up as a draft pick wasted on a player who is highly questionable to contribute much, if at all, in 2023.
