Steven Souza Jr Scenery Change Improves Value
7 years agoArizona Diamondbacks newly acquired Steven Souza Jr. had a career year in 2017. For the first time in his major league career, he was able to stay healthy. Souza was able to hit 30 home runs and get double digit steals (16). Conversely, he was also able to strikeout at a rate of 29%. There are better options if you play in a league with batting average, .239 in 2017. If, however, you are in an on-base percentage league (.351), then Souza is a very solid choice with a good eye at the plate (13.6 BB%). Souza’s success in Arizona will not only be determined by his ability to stay healthy but also based on the health of his teammates. The Diamondbacks lineup has had injury concerns in recent years. Also, Souza arrives at a time when a humidor will be used at Chase Field. This will likely diminish some of his home run power, but there was some expected regression in his HRs anyway. Souza will provide power and some speed in a solid lineup to make it worthwhile to draft him near the 13th round.
