Shane Bieber Wins AL Cy Young Unanimously
4 years agoCleveland Indians starting pitcher Shane Bieber was the unanimous winner of the American League Cy Young Award on Wednesday. The right-hander used a looping curveball and a wipeout slider to go 8-1 with a 1.63 ERA and 122 strikeouts in 77 1/3 innings during the shortened 2020 season. He led the majors in ERA and strikeouts and was tied with Yu Darvish for the most wins. Bieber became the second player in franchise history to win the AL Triple Crown, joining Hall of Famer Bob Feller in 1940. He was the first pitcher to lead the majors in all three categories since Johan Santana did it for the Twins in 2006. Twins right-hander Kenta Maeda finished second in balloting, followed by Blue Jays lefty Hyun-Jin Ryu. Bieber, 25, was taken by the Tribe in the fourth round of the 2016 draft.
