Sandy Alcantara 2025 Fantasy Baseball Outlook: Will He Regain His Cy Young Form?
After spending the entire 2024 season recovering from Tommy John surgery, Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara (elbow) appears to be healthy and ready to go at full strength heading into 2025. Alcantara was one of baseball's best pitchers in 2022 (and was awarded the National League Cy Young award), leading the entire majors in innings pitched (228 2/3) while ranking fifth in ERA 2.28 and ninth in WHIP (0.98). In 2023, however, while still effective, Alcantara regressed, pitching only 184 2/3 IP to a 4.14 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP. The 29-year-old sprained his UCL and underwent Tommy John surgery in October 2023. He threw over 200 innings each of the two years prior and 239 1/3 innings combined from 2019-20 (remember, 2020 was the shortened season). Near the end of the 2024 season, Alcantara was already back to facing live hitters and looked like his old self, hitting 99 MPH with his fastball and with his command intact. Now that he has had a year to rest, recover, and regroup, Alcantara may be in store for another monster season and could easily surpass projections. Alcantara is projected to throw 178 innings with a 3.80 ERA, 3.67 FIP, and an 8.11 K:9 in 2025. His NFBC ADP is currently at 165.4, 17 spots lower than his overall ranking of 148, making him a solid value pick in upcoming fantasy drafts if he can stay healthy.
