Ryan Weathers Could Return This Weekend
4 years agoSan Diego Padres rookie left-hander Ryan Weathers (ankle) could face hitters in a live batting practice session on Wednesday. If all goes well, Weathers could be an option to come off the injured list to start a game against the Miami Marlins this weekend. The 21-year-old's ankle injury obviously isn't too serious, but he'd be especially risky as a fantasy streamer in his first start back. Weathers has a nice 2.91 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 7.7 percent walk rate in 17 outings (11 starts) over 58 2/3 innings this year, but a 4.54 FIP and mediocre 17.9 percent strikeout rate leave a lot to be desired in the second half. The Padres will likely be cautious with his total amount of innings as the season progresses, too, and could eventually send him to the bullpen, which would limit his upside in redraft leagues the rest of the way.

Ryan Weathers Will Open Season On Injured List
2 weeks agoMiami Marlins starting pitcher Ryan Weathers (forearm) will open the season on the injured list with a left forearm strain. Weathers has been one of the most dominant pitchers during spring training. He has logged 11 1/3 innings of work with a stellar 0.79 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP. During this stint, he has tallied 11 punchouts with eight walks and just three hits. Last summer, Weather logged 86 2/3 innings in the majors and held a 3.63 ERA with a 1.18 WHIP. He tallied strikeouts at a modest 21.8 percent rate and showed strong control as he allowed walks at a 6.5 percent rate. With Weathers set to begin the season sidelined, fantasy managers should expect Connor Gillispie to have a clear path to a starting role. Gillispie has also enjoyed a strong spring as well, holding a 0.75 ERA and a near-perfect 0.42 WHIP across 12 frames. Gillispie is worth targeting in deeper formats as an early-season streaming option.

Ryan Weathers Loses Weight In Offseason
3 months agoMiami Marlins left-hander Ryan Weathers, who has been long-tossing for the last few weeks, is 20 pounds lighter this offseason. The 25-year-old has adopted a Keto diet due to his high-insulin resistance. Weathers missed three months in 2024 with a left index-finger strain, but before that he was looking good with a 3.55 ERA in his first 13 starts. The young southpaw returned late in the year to make three starts in September and will be full healthy heading into the 2025 campaign. Following the trade of lefty Jesus Luzardo to the Philadelphia Phillies, Weathers will undoubtedly be counted on in the Marlins starting rotation behind right-hander Sandy Alcantara. Pitching in Miami is not the most attractive circumstances at all, but Weathers has some late-round flier appeal in fantasy going into 2025 after setting career-best strikeout and walk rates in 2024.

Ryan Weathers Listed As Wednesday's Probable Starter
7 months agoThe Miami Marlins are listing left-hander Ryan Weathers (finger) as their probable starter for Wednesday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers at LoanDepot Park. Weathers is coming off five scoreless innings in a minor-league rehab start with Triple-A Jacksonville. Wednesday's start will be his first game action in the big leagues since June 7, so he'll be a shaky fantasy streamer with a likely short leash in terms of his pitch count. The matchup against the first-place Dodgers is another reason to fade Weathers in his return to Miami. Before his finger injury, the former seventh overall pick by the San Diego Padres in 2018 had a solid 3.55 ERA with a 1.14 WHIP, 67 strikeouts and 20 walks in his first full year with the Fish. He had a quality start in his lone start against LA on May 8, when he allowed three earned runs with one walk and three K's in six innings pitched.

Ryan Weathers Looks Good In First Rehab Start
7 months agoMiami Marlins left-hander Ryan Weathers (finger) looked good in his first minor-league rehab start with Single-A Jupiter on Tuesday, tossing three scoreless innings while giving up two hits, walking none and striking out three on 43 pitches (27 strikes). Weathers was moved to the 60-day injured list on July 7 to clear space on the team's 40-man roster while he recovers from a left index-finger strain. Barring a setback on his rehab assignment, Weathers is expected to return to Miami's starting rotation in the middle of September. The 24-year-old southpaw has been out since early June, so he figures to need at least one more rehab start before the big-league club is comfortable activating him. Weathers, a former first-rounder, had a 3.55 ERA and 1.14 WHIP with 67 strikeouts in 71 innings over 13 starts earlier this year before his injury. He's most likely only going to make a start or two for the Marlins down the stretch.
