9 months agoToronto Blue Jays left-handed pitching prospect Ricky Tiedemann (elbow) will make his rehab start on Wednesday in Florida. Tiedemann was dominant in his last rehab outing for Single-A Dunedin last Wednesday, striking out five over 2 1/3 scoreless innings. The 21-year-old southpaw hasn't allowed a run while striking out nine and walking only two in 4 1/3 innings in his last two appearances for Dunedin and appears to be close to being activated from the seven-day injured list to return to Triple-A Buffalo to continue his development. Tiedemann, the team's top pitching prospect, has high-end upside at the next level, but the Blue Jays are going to play it safe with him and continue to build up his arm after he also dealt with an injury last year. It would not be a surprise if he does not make his big-league debut until 2025.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

8 months agoToronto Blue Jays left-handed pitching prospect Ricky Tiedemann (elbow) will have Tommy John surgery on Tuesday, July 30, according to manager John Schneider. Tiedemann was hoping to avoid having surgery on his left elbow and sought out three separate opinions, but in the end, he couldn't avoid elbow reconstruction. The club's top prospect, per MLB Pipeline, is one of the most talented pitching prospects in all of baseball, but he hasn't been able to stay healthy and will now miss the rest of the 2024 season and most likely all of next year as well. It's a big setback for the 21-year-old southpaw, to say the least. He's going to fall considerably in prospect rankings now after he was a prime candidate to make his major-league debut in 2024 before more arm injuries cropped up earlier this year.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

9 months agoToronto Blue Jays starting pitching prospect Ricky Tiedemann (forearm) is seeking a second opinion on his injury in the coming days, according to Keegan Matheson of MLB.com. The top prospect in Toronto left his rehab start on July 10 due to forearm tightness and went for preliminary testing, which did not show any structural damage. However, despite the potentially positive news, the southpaw is seeking a second opinion to see the extent of his injury. The former third-round pick has been sidelined for most of the 2024 season due to a nerve issue in his left elbow. Tiedemann could still contend for a major league debut if he overcomes this injury but should remain stashed in all dynasty and keeper formats as he is considered one of the top pitching prospects in all baseball.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

9 months agoToronto Blue Jays pitching prospect Ricky Tiedemann (elbow) pitched in his third rehab start for Single-A Dunedin on Wednesday. The lefty tossed 3 2/3 innings and allowed three hits, one run, no walks and six strikeouts. Tiedemann, 21, is the club's top pitching prospect and MLB Pipeline ranks him as the 45th prospect overall. The issue for the young pitcher thus far in his career has been staying healthy as he has never thrown over 78 2/3 innings in a season and that came in his first professional season, 2022. Tiedemann drew a lot of praise this spring and many thought he could break camp with the big-league squad, but injuries continue to hold him back. Tiedemann has thrown the ball very well in three rehab starts and could prove to be an option for the Blue Jays later this summer. For now, he remains a better option in dynasty leagues.--Daniel Burdeen - RotoBaller

9 months agoToronto Blue Jays top pitching prospect Ricky Tiedemann (elbow) had a successful rehab outing at Single-A Dunedin on Wednesday. Tiedemann pitched 2 1/3 hitless innings with two walks and five strikeouts. It was another good step for the Blue Jays' top overall prospect, who is progressing from an ulnar nerve injury. Tiedemann is one of the top pitching prospects in the minors and could be getting closer to a major league debut. The left-hander has a plus fastball-slider-changeup mix and once he demonstrates he is removed from his ulnar nerve scare, he could be ready to contribute for the Blue Jays. The 21-year-old is one to monitor closely during his rehab starts.--Brian Buckey - RotoBaller
