Reid Detmers 2021 Outlook: Lacks Flash, but Reliable Arm has Upside
4 years agoThe Angels' first-round selection in the 2020 draft, Detmers is a polished college arm that could reach the Majors by the midpoint of the 2021 season. He's shown above-average command and control of his average stuff. He also has strong makeup and a drive to succeed. All those attributes should combine to help his stuff play up and move the dial from a No. 4 starter to more of a No. 3 hurler for a club desperately in need of reliable innings from its starting rotation. The lefty has four pitches that project to be at least average offerings but he'll need to show the ability to consistently work down in the zone to prevent home-run issues when big-league hitters catch up to his heater, which has just average velocity. Detmers isn't someone you're going to target in redraft leagues during your initial draft, however, he bears watching throughout the season and could open the year in Double-A despite his lack of experience. If he gets a chance with the Angels in the second half of the season, he could be worth a flier as he should settle in quickly thanks to his skill set and maturity. He's a consideration for dynasty leagues but there are other higher-ceiling arms that you may want to target before giving Detmers a shot.
