Mitch Moreland Has Another Opportunity in Boston
7 years agoMitch Moreland in his first season in Boston continued to demonstrate consistency. The Red Sox resigned him and he will start again at first base. 2017 was Moreland's third straight season hitting over 20 home runs and he combined that with a below league average batting average (.246). Moreland’s strength is his power, but Fenway Park is not kind to left-handed power hitters. He did lower his strikeout percentage and obtain a career best base on balls percentage from 2016, 20.8 and 9.9 respectively. At 32 years old, it is getting less and less likely that Moreland can repeat his numbers from 2015. Now the questions becomes whether he can produce enough to be serviceable. Many hitters are hitting for power in recent years, making it less desirable to obtain an aging player in lieu of one with more upside. Moreland is a player that can be acquired off the waiver wire. The only reason I would suggest to draft him is in very deep leagues or AL only leagues, even then he is not even a top-20 first base option.
