Michael Carter 2021 Outlook: An Opportunity To Seize A Significant Role
4 years agoMichael Carter accumulated over 4,000 total yards during his four seasons at North Carolina, while leading the Tar Heels in rushing touchdowns as a freshman (8), and generating a team-high 597 rushing yards as a sophomore. The 5' 8", 200 pound Carter also surpassed 1,000 yards on the ground (1,245/1,003) in 2019-2020 while sharing touches with Javonte Williams. He produced 421 receiving yards during his final two seasons, while consistently displaying his elusiveness and versatility. That elevated him among this year's most enticing prospects, which compelled the Jets to secure him in the fourth round of the NFL Draft (107th overall). That has placed Carter in a favorable landing spot as he will only be contending with Tevin Coleman, Ty Johnson, and La'Mical Perine for touches. Carter should also benefit from the transformation that is occurring in New York, due to the arrival of new head coach Robert Saleh and offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur. Saleh served as San Francisco's defensive coordinator from 2017-2020, while LaFleur operated as the 49ers' passing game coordinator during the past three seasons. That has fueled the Jets' transition to an offensive approach that will resemble San Francisco's outside zone rushing scheme. This is advantageous for Carter, whose effectiveness as a one-cut runner should accelerate his progress toward attaining a sizable workload. He can also expect to be involved as a receiver, due to his capabilities as a pass-catcher and pass-blocker. He is worthy of selection at his current ADPs in both best ball drafts (85/RB32), and dynasty startup leagues (65/RB27).
