7/5:The New York Mets are no longer exploring trade options for starting pitchers Noah Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom and instead are exploring scenarios for fellow starting pitchers Zack Wheeler and Steven Matz. Although this route would not net the Mets the best possible prospects, it didn’t sound like there were jaw-dropping deals available to them for the former two anyway. For pitchers of Syndergaard's and deGrom’s caliber who are under contract for multiple seasons, it would take such a deal to land either. Meanwhile, Wheeler and Matz are both in the midst of resurgent seasons after injuries limited both significantly the last few years. Wheeler owns a 4.36 ERA -- largely inflated due to two bad starts -- and 1.30 WHIP with 91 strikeouts to 35 walks across 16 starts and 95 innings pitched, while regularly hitting the upper 90s on his fastball again. Matz has put up a 3.46 ERA and 1.22 WHIP with 76 strikeouts against 32 walks in 16 starts and 83 1/3 innings pitched. Neither would land the Mets a top prospect but likely one solid enough to make them worth dealing.--John Smith
