Matt Schnell suffered a first-round knockout loss to Steve Erceg in the main card opener of UFC 296. Erceg had been using his pinpoint striking accuracy from range effectively throughout the first round, busting up Schnell and making him bleed around his eye. In the second round, Erceg landed a devastating left hook that knocked Schnell out cold. Schnell has struggled with losses in recent UFC bouts, losing three of his last four UFC fights.
