Matt Ryan 2021 Outlook: Former MVP Running Out of Time to Get to the Promised Land
3 years agoMatt Ryan has been the epitome of consistency over his career despite playing for four head coaches and five offensive coordinators. He has thrown at least 26 touchdowns in nine seasons (64%) and has surpassed 4,000 yards in 10 straight. From 2016 through 2019, Ryan had fantasy schizophrenia and finished as the QB2, QB15, QB2, and QB11 in that time. Unfortunately, the bad personality stuck around for 2020, and he finished as QB12. However, things are looking up for Ryan heading into this season, despite his loss of future Hall of Famer Julio Jones. Arthur Smith is the new head coach of the Falcons and the brightest offensive mind in Atlanta since Kyle Shanahan, who led Ryan to an MVP season and a trip to the Super Bowl. Smith is responsible for the rebirth of Ryan Tannehill's career, who finished as the QB3 from the time he started in 2019, and the QB7 in 2020. The team also spent the fourth overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft on generational tight end prospect Kyle Pitts and signed running back Mike Davis as a free agent to be their bell cow. Did I mention Ryan still has 2020's WR5 overall Calvin Ridley? If history has shown us anything, it's that Ryan has a floor of about QB15, and he will throw for at least 4,000 yards and 26 touchdowns. He is the unsexy pick late in your drafts that may just turn out to be the Belle of the ball. The former MVP needs to find the antidote to his recent struggles because time is running out for another Super Bowl run. His current ADP sits at QB14, which makes him a risk-free insurance policy or the perfect bridge quarterback if a manager is awaiting the emergence of a talented rookie.
