San Diego Padres manager Mike Shildt said on MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM that third baseman Manny Machado (hip) "will be in the DH spot to make sure we limit the load on his lower half." A strained right hip flexor has kept Machado out of the team's starting lineup for each of the last four games, although he did serve in a pinch-hitting role several times since getting hurt last week in Anaheim against the Los Angeles Angels. The 31-year-old veteran will hope to pick up where he left off offensively before his injury as he faces Oakland Athletics right-hander Joey Estes on Monday, a pitcher he's never faced in his career. After getting off to a slow start in 2024, Machado has picked things up at the plate and is hitting .333 (16-for-48) with a homer, four doubles, seven RBI, three steals and five runs scored in 15 games since May 22.
