Luke Voit 2022 Player Outlook: A Late Round Slugger with Big Power Potential
3 years agoAfter an offseason of trade rumors, Voit finally has a new home and a full-time gig in San Diego following a March trade, and it's an excellent opportunity for the powerful righty. Voit will try and pick up some of the slack left behind by the Fernando Tatis Jr. injury, and he'll do it as the Padres DH and cleanup hitter going into Opening Day. Voit has battled injuries himself during his career, including playing in just 68 games last season. When healthy, Voit has proven a formidable slugger, posting an .883 OPS and .249 ISO in his time with New York. Even last season when Voit struggled to the tune of a .239 BA and .197 ISO he clobbered the ball, putting up a 90.7 MPH average exit velocity and incredible 52.2% hard hit rate. His .500 xSLG was 63 points higher than his actual slugging percentage, and his 20% HR/FB ratio was his lowest since his Cardinals days. A permanent DH role should help Voit limit injuries, and he should get plenty of RBI opportunities hitting behind Manny Machado and Jake Cronenworth. Altogether, Voit seems like an excellent value at pick 267 per NFBC ADP, as there aren't many chances to get a bat with 30 or more homer upside that late.
