Luis Gil Set to Make 2025 Debut on Sunday
New York Yankees right-hander Luis Gil (lat) is set to make his first MLB start of the year this Sunday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. Gil made four rehab appearances between Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Double-A Somerset in July. In his last outing on Tuesday in Triple-A, he threw 75 pitches while striking out seven batters and allowing one earned run on three hits. It's likely that the Yankees don't push him far beyond the 75-80 pitch mark on Sunday, but the reigning American League Rookie of the Year will be a big boost to a Yankees rotation that has lost Clarke Schmidt and Gerrit Cole for the season. In 2023, Gil had a 3.50 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and 171 strikeouts in 151 2/3 innings pitched. If he's available in your league, he is a recommended player to pick up. At this point, it's unclear if the Yankees will go to a six-man rotation or move Cam Schlittler, Marcus Stroman, or Will Warren to the bullpen or Triple-A.
