Leonard Fournette 2018 Outlook: An Improvement Upon Rookie Campaign To Be Expected
6 years agoWhile his rookie campaign was certainly a strong one, Leonard Fournette was very boom or bust from a rushing standpoint. His nine touchdowns in just 13 games bolstered his final numbers, but he had seven games with under 70 rushing yards compared to just five games with over 100 yards. Fournette also gets knocked for not being heavily involved in the passing game, but he did catch a pass in every game he played last season for a total of 36 receptions. There's no reason he can't catch 40-50 balls this season, even with Corey Grant and T.J. Yeldon viewed as better passing down backs.
One thing we have no concern about is Fournette's volume. When your team's quarterback is a guy that belongs in the CFL, you know the team is trying to pound the ball on the ground. Even though we know running is an inefficient way of moving the ball downfield, the Jaguars don't care, so, neither do we for fantasy purposes. Fournette averaged 20 carries a game last season. If you combine his rushing with his receiving, he should touch the ball over 350 times as well as handle all of the goal line carries. The Jaguars, as a whole, are going to regress a bit this year, but Fournette is an uber talented back commanding considerable volume. In the early rounds of fantasy drafts, your focus should be on targeting players you know will touch the ball a lot. Fournette is well worth a late first round pick.
