Kyrie Irving 2019 Player Outlook
5 years agoBrooklyn Nets point guard Kyrie Irving finds himself in a new home in 2019, but the results should look a lot like they have in recent seasons for the former Boston Celtic, if not better. Irving takes over the starting point guard spot in Brooklyn for D’Angelo Russell, who rode that role to an All-Star appearance last year. Nets head coach Kenny Atkinson’s offensive system will offer Irving plenty of chances to rack up the points and assists, and with Kevin Durant expected to miss most — or all — of the 2019-2020 season, Irving is the unquestioned number-one option on this team. Last year, Irving averaged 23.8 points and a career-high 6.9 assists per game while shooting over 40 percent from three for the third year in a row. Irving is going to feast in this system. His career high in scoring came in the 2016-2017 year, his final as a Cavalier, when he scored 25.2 per game. That’s reachable in Brooklyn, though Atkinson’s tendency to limit minutes and the team having a capable backup in Spencer Dinwiddie could impose some restrictions on what Irving can accomplish. Even with that threat, draft him in the late first or early second round.
