Kyle Lewis 2021 Fantasy Outlook: Real Power With A High Strikeout Rate
4 years agoSeattle Mariners outfielder Kyle Lewis was a feel-good story in 2020. He smacked six home runs over 18 games after being called up in September of 2019, so he was a known commodity entering last season. He was not expected to take home American League Rookie of the Year honors, but that's exactly what he did with a .262/.364/.437 slash line with 11 home runs, 28 RBI and five stolen bases. It was a tale of two seasons for the 25-year-old, who got off to a scorching-hot start with a .328/.418/.526 slash line with 38 strikeouts in July and August (131 at-bats), but he put up a .147/.270/.280 line with 33 K's over 75 at-bats in September. He finished 2020 with a 29.3% strikeout rate, an improvement from the 38.7% he logged in 2019 but above the MLB average of 21.8%. Lewis' zone-contact rate (73.3%) and chase-contact rate (41.4%) were both well below league averages at 82.8% and 59.4%, respectively. His poor plate discipline leads to all of those strikeouts, but clearly it wasn't all bad for the reigning AL Rookie of the Year. His 14.0% walk rate in 2020, which ranked in the 87th percentile, was encouraging, and his career 14.4% barrel rate and 18.7% HR/FB show his power is real. The home run upside is there if you can stomach the strikeouts, and he should be good for a handful of stolen bases. If he can show nominal improvement in his plate discipline, Lewis can provide solid return on his 128 ADP.
