Kenyan Drake 2020 Outlook: Underutilized and Underappreciated No More
5 years agoThroughout his entire football career going all the way back to Alabama, Kenyan Drake was never used as a feature back. For some reason, this led to his NFL team, the Miami Dolphins, believing he couldn't be one. Drake has high end speed with above average burst and agility. Finally freed from the doldrums of Miami, Drake was unleashed in Arizona, replacing a broken David Johnson. Following a midseason trade, Drake was immediately thrust into an every down role and he proved all the haters wrong. I'm not quite sure why Drake isn't being viewed as a legitimate first round pick. I understand the trepidation surrounding the late breakout (age 25 season is late for running backs), but Drake has the total package here. We care about three things: opportunity, situation, and talent, in that order. The talent has always been there. The problem was a bad situation and limited opportunity. The Cardinals have since traded DJ and even when Chase Edmonds returned from injury last season, he did not eat into Drake's workload at all. Drake played at least 70% of the snaps in all but one game with Arizona. The only move the Cardinals made this offseason was to draft Eno Benjamin in the seventh round. Everything they are doing points to Drake being a three down back in a fast paced, improving offense. Drake was the RB3, averaging 20.3 ppg to close out the fantasy season in Arizona. He is viable pick at the turn and someone you should aggressively target beginning in the middle of the second round.
