Kalen Ballage 2021 Outlook: Fun Renaissance Story With Uneventful Conclusion
4 years agoStatistically, Kalen Ballage was the worst running back in NFL history at the time he left the Dolphins and also when he was subsequently cut by the Jets. For some reason, the Chargers decided he was worth a spot on their practice squad. Injuries to Austin Ekeler, Justin Jackson, and Troymaine Pope forced the Chargers to promote Ballage to the active roster in Week 9. Ballage actually looked good for one game, but then reverted to his ineffective self while still retaining fantasy value due to heavy usage in the passing game. After fading back into obscurity, the Chargers cut Ballage and the Steelers picked him up. Ballage joins a crowded backfield, but one without any standout behind rookie first round pick Najee Harris. We know Harris will be the feature back, but it's anyone's guess as to who fills in when Harris needs a rest between Benny Snell, Anthony McFarland, Jaylen Samuels, and Ballage. I would consider Ballage on the outside looking in for a roster spot and even if he does make the team, it would require another onslaught of injuries for him to ever see significant snaps. You can safely ignore Ballage in all formats.
