Jorge Soler Still Has Time
7 years agoJorge Soler is only just about to turn 26 years old. The reason that’s important is because he could still be an MLB star. Soler’s waffling between post-hype sleeper status and Quad-A status at this point, so it’s crucial to remember how young he was when this all started. That said, the same concerns that were present last year are present this year. Soler packs a ton of power in his bat, but there are many more empty hacks being produced than anything else. He absolutely punished Triple-A pitching when he made contact in 2017, but he still struck out 25% of the time there. His major-league stint consisted of a dreadful .144 batting average and 32.7% K-rate. Will he finally break through in 2018? He’ll likely get the chance since KC’s lineup is pretty terrible, but unless he can finally focus on making more contact, he’ll continue to struggle at the major league level. He should only be drafted by true believers, those in deep leagues, and those who are taking a flier at the end of a draft. However, if he wins an everyday job and hits well the first week, expect him to headline all the hot pickup lists.
