Jon Gray Working On Slider Mechanics
7 years agoColorado Rockies starting pitcher Jon Gray has had a pretty terrible season so far, but he’s working overtime with his pitching coaches to try to improve his slider in hopes that improvement in that pitch will make the difference. The bad news is that the improvement hasn’t shown up just yet. The good news is that a lot of Gray’s problems are nothing more than terrible luck. Gray’s ERA of 5.68 is inflated due to an unfortunate strand rate of just 63.5% and heightened BABIP of .376. That’s the second worst strand rate amongst qualified starters and the worst BABIP by nearly 30 points. As both of these numbers normalize, Gray’s ERA will drop back down closer to his current FIP of 3.15. Prudent owners would try to buy low on Gray now.
