Jeurys Familia Is Back, But May Not Close
7 years agoNew York Mets reliever (and normally, closer) Jeurys Familia made a surprising return to the team last August, after reports stated in May the blood clot in his shoulder could be career-threatening. While he did return to success, it’s worth noting his velocity was down. Regardless, the bigger question with Familia may be how often he closes for the Mets in 2018. New Mets skipper Mickey Callaway has mentioned to the media that he might not have a dedicated closer in 2018, and may make decisions based on the situation instead. Until we know more, you should probably avoid drafting Familia as high as you normally would. Familia is coming off a rough 4.38 ERA and 1.46 WHIP, but those figures are largely buoyed by back-to-back three-run outings surrendered early in the season combined with Familia only appearing in 26 games due to injury.
