Javonte Williams Could Start Year As Cowboys RB1, But Faces Competition
Javonte Williams, two seasons removed from his multi-ligament knee injury back early in the 2022 season, signed with his new team after the 2024 season. His veteran competition consists of former Carolina Panthers back Miles Sanders. Both were massively disappointing in 2023 and 2024. It seems like a mid-off is set to occur, though that could be interrupted if rookie draft picks Jaydon Blue or Phil Mafah end up impressing. Blue seems to have the highest upside of these backs, as he ran a 4.39-second 40-yard dash and was impressive as a pass-catcher and route-runner RB in the SEC last season in college. It might take some time for him to earn a bigger role, though. But aside from blindly assuming that Williams needed over two whole years to recover from his injury, it's hard to imagine drafting him paying off in fantasy football. Instead, it's likely better to just draft Blue and stash him on your bench until he starts earning significant touches.
