Javier Baez In No Rush To Resume Extension Talks
4 years agoChicago Cubs shortstop Javier Baez doesn't regret declining the team's offer during negotiations on a long-term extension over the winter, and he's in no "rush" to resume talks in the uncertain climate of the COVID-19 pandemic. Baez will be eligible for free agency after the 2021 season, and he said that talks were "progressing" in March before baseball was shut down. The superstar shortstop has a 2020 salary of $10 million (prorated) and was the primary focus of the front office for much of the winter. Baez, the MVP runner-up in 2018, has been an All-Star the last two years and hit .281/.316/.531 with 29 home runs, 85 RBI, 89 runs and 11 stolen bases in 2019. The 27-year-old has some big names ahead of him at a loaded fantasy position, but he'll still come off the board in the third or fourth rounds of drafts and is a perfectly fine consolation prize behind the likes of Francisco Lindor, Trea Turner and Trevor Story.
