James Cook 2022 Outlook: Pass-Catching Rookie Who Could Provide Value in PPR Formats
3 years agoThe Buffalo Bills struck out trying to sign J.D. McKissic in the offseason, so they went ahead and took a younger clone in James Cook with the 63rd pick of the 2022 NFL Draft. In his four years at the University of Georgia, 26% of his opportunities came in the form of targets (vs. rush attempts). In 2021, he averaged 9.7 opportunities per game (7.5 rush attempts and 2.2 targets). Not a huge workload by any means, but he averaged 6.44 yards per carry and 8.9 yards per target and scored 11 total touchdowns last season. As it stands, Devin Singletary is set to be the starting running back for the Bills, but that doesn't mean Cook can't have a role. That role might start off small, but it should grow throughout the season. In terms of his standalone value, that's probably pretty small, especially given Josh Allen targeted his running backs just 96 times last season, seventh-least in the NFL. In Weeks 14 through 18 last season, Singletary was gifted a near every-down role. He averaged 19.4 opportunities on just about 80% of the snaps. If he were to miss any time this season, Cook would likely take on a big role in the offense, much like the undersized Singletary did late last season. Took a look at the versatile rookie after the first 30 or so running backs have come off the board in 2022 fantasy drafts.
