1 year agoHouston Astros outfielder Jake Meyers should have a long leash as the team's starting center fielder in 2024, according to The Athletic's Chandler Rome. Both general manager Dana Brown and manager Joe Espada seem committed to giving Meyers as much everyday playing time as possible. But ultimately, his production will determine how long he stays in the lineup on a consistent basis. If Meyers does struggle, the Astros could look somewhere other than utility man Mauricio Dubon to replace him. Moving Chas McCormick to center field and using Yordan Alvarez in left field would be the more likely scenario. The 27-year-old Meyers hit .227/.296/.382 with a career-high 10 home runs, 33 RBI and five steals in 112 games in 2023. His glove is much more attractive than his bat at the moment.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

5 days agoHouston Astros infielder Brendan Rodgers and outfielders Cam Smith and Jake Meyers are not in Saturday's lineup when the Astros conclude a three-game set against the New York Mets. As a result, Zach Dezenzo will cover right field for Smith, Mauricio Dubon will cover the keystone for Rogers, and Chas McCormick will replace Meyers in center field. Fantasy managers should expect Smith, Rogers, and Meyers to all return to the starting lineup on Monday evening when they host the San Francisco Giants. Smith has started in right field during the first two games of the campaign. Rogers has emerged as Houston's No. 1 second baseman while Jake Meyers appears to be the top option in center field. Dezenzo, Dubon, and McCormick are worth a look in DFS facing New York right-hander Griffin Canning, who held a 5.19 ERA last season.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

6 months agoHouston Astros first baseman Jon Singleton and outfielder Jake Meyers are on the bench for Game 2 of the wild-card series on Wednesday against the Detroit Tigers at Minute Maid Park. Victor Caratini is making the start at first base and will bat sixth, while Chas McCormick is starting in center field and in the nine-hole in a must-win game against Tigers left-handed opener Tyler Holton. Both Singleton and Meyers could enter Wednesday's contest later on once the lefty is out of the game. Neither Caratini nor McCormick bring a ton of DFS appeal to the table on Wednesday. Caratini hit .269 (66-for-245) on the year with eight home runs and 30 RBI, while McCormick had the worst season of his four-year career with a .211/.271/.306 slash line and five home runs in 94 games. McCormick was just activated from the injured list after fracturing his right hand in mid-September.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

7 months agoThe Houston Astros reinstated outfielder Jake Meyers from the paternity list on Thursday and also recalled reliever Nick Hernandez from Triple-A Sugar Land. In corresponding moves, the team optioned catcher Cesar Salazar and right-hander Forrest Whitley to Sugar Land. Meyers is back with the team after missing the last three games to be with his family as he welcomed a child into the world. He isn't back in the starting lineup for Thursday's series finale in Cincinnati against the Reds, though, with Chas McCormick starting in center field and batting eighth against Reds rookie right-hander Rhett Lowder. Meyers should return to at least a platoon role in center field in Houston now that he's back. The 28-year-old has a .226/.290/.373 slash line on the year with a below-average .664 OPS, 12 homers, 55 RBI and nine stolen bases in 407 at-bats.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

7 months agoThe Houston Astros placed outfielder Jake Meyers on the paternity list on Monday and recalled outfielder Chas McCormick from Triple-A Sugar Land in a corresponding move. Meyers will most likely be away from the team for the next three days while he attends to family matters, so fantasy managers probably won't have him available for the entire three-game series in Cincinnati against the Reds this week. McCormick, 29, might get a little run in center field at Great American Ball Park this week with Meyers out, but once Meyers returns, he'll return to being a bench bat, at best. The former 21st-round pick in 2017 out of Millersville University of Pennsylvania has hit just .192/.256/.292 with a .548 OPS, five home runs, 24 RBI and eight steals in 219 at-bats in 2024. With Kyle Tucker (shin) on the verge of a return, too, there's just no opening for consistent playing time for the struggling McCormick.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
