Hagen Smith to Start on Saturday at Double-A
Hagen Smith (elbow) is expected to return to action this Saturday for the Double-A Birmingham Barons, his first game action since May 10, according to MLB.com's Scott Merkin. Smith, the team's No. 3 prospect per MLB Pipeline, has been sidelined with left-elbow soreness but is ready to return to game action this weekend. The 21-year-old former fifth overall pick last year out of Arkansas was 2-0 with a nice 2.10 ERA and 1.21 WHIP with 42 strikeouts and 20 walks in 25 2/3 innings at Birmingham over seven starts before his elbow injury. Smith has always had excellent stuff, but his command is what has gotten him in trouble, and it hasn't gone away with a 7.0 BB/9 so far in 2025. The 6-foot-3, 235-pound southpaw has a well above-average fastball and slider, but he probably won't be a candidate to make his MLB debut until at least 2026.
