Giants Think Joey Bart Needs More Development
4 years agoSan Francisco Giants manager Gabe Kapler reiterated what president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi said about catching prospect Joey Bart not being a likely candidate to jump in right away and replace Buster Posey, who has opted out of the 2020 season amid the coronavirus pandemic. "We all feel strongly that Bart has some development left," Kapler said. Bart, the team's top prospect per MLB Pipeline, is in the team's 60-player pool and should make his MLB debut at some point in 2020, but it sounds as though Rob Brantly and Tyler Heineman will share the catching duties to begin the season. Bart is San Fran's catcher of the future and hit .278 with 16 home runs, 48 RBI and five steals in 79 games for High-A San Jose and Double-A Richmond in 2019, but he's still more of a dynasty asset than a redraft one in the shortened 60-game season.
