Garrett Mitchell 2023 MLB Player Outlook: Speedster Has Some Regression Concerns
2 years agoHitting .311 and swiping eight bags in 28 major league games could have a lot of people excited about Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Garrett Mitchell heading into 2023. Underlying numbers paint a different story for the speedster, however. Mitchell had a completely unsustainable .548 BABIP during his short stint with the Brew Crew last season, pointing to significant regression for that .311 average. Even the most bullish projection systems have him hitting .250 in 2023. ATC has his projected line at .242/.314/.372. That's not someone who will help your average category as he did at the end of last season. The one thing Mitchell does excellent, however, is run. He was caught zero times while stealing those eight bases in the majors and has been caught just three times in his professional career. The 24-year-old does have 13 minor league home runs in 132 games, so he's not useless there. However, one big problem will face the 2020 first-round pick this season. His 41.2% strikeout percentage from his small sample size is concerning. Mitchell is a name to watch late in upcoming fantasy drafts and has an ADP of 216. If he gets on base enough, he could contend for 20 steals –ATC projects 22–but he has some question marks heading into his first full season.
