Falcons Release Marcus Mariota
2 years agoThe Atlanta Falcons released quarterback Marcus Mariota on Tuesday, according to the team. The Falcons signed Mariota to a two-year deal last offseason, but the team will save roughly $12 million in salary cap space in 2023 by releasing him. It comes with a $2.5 million dead-money hit. The 29-year-old began the 2022 campaign as the starting QB for the team, but he ended up being benched for Desmond Ridder and finished the season on Injured Reserve due to a knee injury that required surgery. In his 13 starts for the Falcons, Mariota completed just 61.3 percent of his 300 attempts for 2,219 yards, 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He'll have to prove that he's past his knee injury in free agency, but he figures to draw interest on the open market as a backup in his next stop.
