Edwin Diaz To Begin Rehab Assignment On Thursday
6 months agoNew York Mets right-handed reliever Edwin Diaz (shoulder), who is on the injured list with a right-shoulder impingement, threw a 21-pitch bullpen session on Tuesday and is scheduled to start a minor-league rehab assignment on Thursday. The Mets still expect to have Diaz back as soon as he's eligible to come off the IL on Tuesday, June 11. As long as he doesn't have any setbacks in minor-league games, the hard-throwing 30-year-old should only require a couple of rehab outings later this week/this weekend before rejoining the Mets' bullpen. Before going on the shelf, Diaz was given a break from the closing role after struggling to a 5.40 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in his 20 appearances out of the bullpen this year. The best version of the Mets bullpen has Diaz serving as a lock-down closer, but until he's over his shoulder injury, expect a committee approach to saves to continue between Reed Garrett, Jake Diekman and Adam Ottavino.
