6 months agoDustin Poirier challenged Islam Makhachev for the lightweight title in the main event at UFC 302 on Saturday in his third bid for undisputed gold. Despite a valiant effort by Poirier, Makhachev's elite grappling proved the difference as the Russian fighter sank in a D'arce choke, forcing Poirier to submit in the fifth round. In 22:42 of action, Poirier landed 74 significant strikes. This was potentially Poirier's final opportunity to claim undisputed UFC gold as he hinted at this being his final fight.
