Drew Pomeranz Is A Quiet Top-30 SP
7 years agoDrew Pomeranz has become the quiet professional. He provides above average stats that most fantasy managers want, but are surprised when his name is attached. The cause is likely because his expectations are tied to performance from earlier in his career. However, Pomeranz has significantly improved. In 2017, Pomeranz had a 9.02 K/9 and a 3.32 earned run average in 173 innings. Admittedly, this is the highest amount of innings he has ever pitched. While Pomeranz does have positive attributes, there are negative points that need to be brought up as well. Pomeranz primarily used two pitches for his success, a fastball (55%) and a curveball (37%). It will prove difficult to maintain success with just two pitches, particularly given his high base on balls percentage of 3.58. Another point of concern is that Pomeranz still needs to figure out how to pitch to left-handed batters. He allowed a .291 average against left-handers versus a .231 average against right-handers. Despite these points of improvement, Pomeranz can still provide plenty of value. He can be drafted in the 14th round or later and provide more value than pitchers drafted with higher name-value.
